Deutscher Direct Distribution

On March 5th Deutscher Mowers commenced direct Dealer distribution of its equipment and spare parts. This is a major change for Deutscher. While the Ballarat company has been manufacturing commercial mowers for over 50-years, the company goes back to 1906 when Harry Deutscher began making farm machinery, stationary engines and tractors in Hamilton, western Victoria. The business moved to Ballarat in 1926. Harry Deutscher was killed in a motor accident in 1950 and his son Eric took over the business. Eric retired in 2000 and his son Peter took over at the helm.

"This business had seen many tough times including the two World Wars (when having a German surname didn't help in Australia), the Great Depression, numerous droughts and yet we are still in operation and still owned by the same family!" Peter Deutscher says. In the mid-sixties Adelaide-based Scott Bonnar acquired the distribution rights and when Rover Mowers purchased Scott Bonnar in 1981, Rover took over this role, which it has performed ever since. Deutscher Mowers are sold through out Australia as well as exported to New Zealand, South Africa and Papua New Guinea. There have even been some Deutscher Mowers exported to China.

"But with modern logistics and electronic ordering, we believe we can offer quality service to all customers both in Australia and overseas," MD Peter Deutscher says. "The current dry spell has allowed us to review our manufacturing processes and procedures and also look at what we manufacture to improve our products," Peter says indicating that many of the ensuing changes will appear in the marketplace in the coming years.

The first new product is the Model 65 Chipper Shredder developed after Deutscher foresaw a big demand for this type of product, which offers an environmentally friendly way of disposing of green waste and obtaining good quality mulch to put back onto a garden (and providing up to 70% water saving in the process!) "Add to that high tip fees and not being able to burn this material - mulching is a very good alternative for everybody," Peter Deutscher feels. Peter Deutscher indicated that Specialist Servicing Dealers interested in applying for a dealership should contact his company as the business was re-evaluating all Rover dealership arrangements.
